The Chemung Canal opened in 1833 and provided a waterway from the Chemung River at Elmira, NY to Seneca Lake at Watkins Glen, NY. The canal traveled through the towns of Elmira, Horseheads, Millport, Montour Falls (Havana), and Watkins Glen. A feeder canal from Corning to Horseheads supplied the water. The canal closed for good in 1878.
